Synopsis

Erased de Kooning Drawing is a work of art that radically challenges the definition of art and understanding authorship. Three American artists were involved in his creation in 1953: Robert Rauschenberg erased a drawing of Willem de Kooning, who had given his consent with a certain reluctance. Jasper Johns provided it with a label on the occasion of his first presentation that contributed significantly to his perception as a standalone work. The sheet transformed into something new was conceived as neo-dada in the 1950s, as the beginning of concept art in the 1960s and as a departure into postmodernism in the 1980s. Numerous artists referred to the work and Rauschenberg itself picked it up again and again. It proved to be a test case for provisions of modernism, literalism, and postmodernism. Gregor Stemmrich's knowledgeable art theoretical consideration elaborates the work's continued relevance to the theory of image, index, track, allegorical, and question of appropriation.
