Synopsis
Bridget Riley shot to fame in the sixties with her abstract black and white pictures. This title constitutes a concise overview of her newer work. After her initial pcitures she soon extended her expressive spectrum with colour contrasts and using only five colours at the beginning, began to explore their interactions. Since about 1980 she has been mixing a larger number of colours to form blocks and ensembles in free rhythms. Recently, Riley has abandoned the strict formal pattern of a structure of stripes for a vertical register of broad striations crossed by diagonals and now she uses up to 20 different colour shades. In her newest series, Riley returns to exploring curves and diagonals extending beyond picture boundaries and their exciting relations to the colour structure of painting.
