9783775709071: Bridget Riley: Selected Paintings 1961-1999

Synopsis

Influential British artist Bridget Riley is in the vanguard of European op-art artists. Having explored the techniques of the neo-Impressionist painter Georges Seurat since the late 1950s, Riley developed her own approach to representing optical phenomena, working first in black, white and grey, and then in colour from 1967. Riley's art hit the very nerve of the time, as may be seen in the adoption of her imagery for commercial purposes both in fashion and graphic design. In this text, examples from Riley's work are used to trace her artistic development from 1961 to 1999. The artist herself has a chance to voice her opinions in interviews with E.H. Gombrich and fellow artist Michael Craig-Martin, as well as in a theoretical text. An essay about her reception in the 1990s completes this retrospective.
