Synopsis

Gustave Flaubert reports his claim to the crown of poetry with Madame Bovary. Like Arachne, who in Ovid's metamorphoses challenges the goddess Minerva to competition in weaving and is cruelly punished for her audacity, he also wants to compete with the old master of his craft. In a hiddenly told new edition of the mythical competition, he forces the literary god Victor Hugo to an author duel - and practices late revenge for Arachne. In his first Ma-dame Bovary, Flaubert builds an entire building of covert mockery quotes and provocative references to the century novel Notre-Dame de Paris. Arachne's revenge opens the hidden doors that connect the two literary buildings and follows the secret passages laid out by Flaubert between the lines. On a cryptic backyard laid out in the text, it finally comes to the final showdown, which Flaubert, so viel sei verraten, decides for itself with a stroke of genius narrative weaving.
