Synopsis
Posselt attempts to get an eye on the interface and the mutual condition relationship of figuration and performance in both historical and systematic ways. The question is developed about the critical genealogy of that tropus, which classical rhetoric calls catachrese or abusio. As an abusive naming and as an inactual metaphor, catachresis opens up a figurative and performative strategy of resignification and re-enrollment that underlines the preliminarity and incompleteness of linguistic denomination processes. Starting from ancient tropical theory to language reflection in the early modern period in Locke and Vico, the supplementary rhetoric of Fontaniers as well as Nietzsche's genealogy to Austin's theory of performative failures and Butler's concept of a performative iterability, the rhetorical wit implied in Western philosophy With current attachments poststructuralist theory formation closely guided and mobilized for a rhetorical theory of the performative.
