Alles, was im öffentlichen Raum herumsteht oder sich bewegt, ist mehr oder weniger gut gestaltet: Papierkörbe ebenso wie Verkehrsschilder, Straßen und Parkbänke, alle Informationen und Wegweisungen, sogar die Bäume und natürlich auch die Kleidung der Menschen. Und dennoch oder gerade deshalb entpuppt sich der öffentliche Raum immer auch als chaotisch. Das Empirische und das Gestaltete verwickeln sich und geraten durcheinander. Ebenso aufregend aber ist der permanente Wandel der Öffentlichkeit, da die Grenzen zwischen öffentlichem und privatem Raum längst nicht mehr offensichtlich und erkennbar sind.

Inmitten dieses Getümmels nun bewegen sich die Beiträge der Autoren dieses Buches, die von der Köln International School of Design (KISD) versammelt wurden. Ihre Projekte, Beobachtungen, Beschreibungen und Kommentare erkunden die Möglichkeiten und Chancen, die Notwendigkeit oder auch Unfähigkeit von Design im pulsierenden Lebensraum unseres Alltags.

Everything that stands still or moves in the public space is more or less well designed: wastepaper baskets no less than traffic signs and park benches, information items and signposts, even the trees, and naturally also the clothing people wear. Yet even so – or precisely for this reason – the public space is always chaotic as well. Empirical and designed things get tangled up and end in a state of confusion. Just as exciting, however, is the constant changing of the public realm, since the boundaries that separate public and private space have long since ceased to be clear and recognizable.

Situated right in the midst of this tumult are the essays by the authors of this book, which were collected by the Cologne International School of Design (KISD). Their projects, observations, descriptions, and commentaries explore the possibilities and opportunities, the necessity as well as the incapacity of design in the pulsating, vibrating world of our everyday lives.
