Seinen Durchbruch erzielte Jahn 1985 mit dem State of Illinois Center in Chicago. Aus einem öffentlichen Verwaltungsgebäude formte er ein siebzehngeschossiges Glas-Atrium. Seit den 90er Jahren entdeckte er neue Themen und Orte, er entwarf Hochhäuser für Philadelphia und New York, Singapur, Warschau, Tokio und Rotterdam. Sein Faible für hohe Türme trug ihm den Namen Turmvater Jahn angelehnt an Turnvater Jahn ein. Jahn erhielt internationale Anerkennung mit spektakulären Bauwerken wie dem Frankfurter Messeturm (19851990), dem Sony Center mit Bahntower am Potsdamer Platz in Berlin (19932000), dem Flughafen Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi (19952005) sowie den Veer Towers in Las Vegas (20062010).
