Synopsis

Aharon Appelfeld, one of Israel's most important writers, wrote one of his most personal books with "Meine Eltern". He wrote about the last summer of a childhood...

August 1938: On the banks of the River Prut in Romania, summer fresheners, predominantly secularized Jews. Ten-year-old Erwin and his parents are also here, but the child feels that something is different: behind the summer joys, the bathing trips and lovelies, the world everyone knows comes to an end. Some depart earlier, others displace the news from the West. Tensions do not remain, even between the parents, the mother who reads novels, believes in God and in the good, and the father, the engineer who sees everything rational and pessimistic. When the family breaks into the city, Erwin invades fear. At school, he was threatened with beatings, he was reviled as a Jew - and he begins to suspect that much more depends on the different attitudes of his parents: the future, survival.

A sensitive novel that seismographically records the brutality of the coming war - and at the same time the portrait of a bourgeois world before disaster. One of the most personal books by Aharon Appelfeld, direct, honest and yet also childish-beautiful.
