Synopsis

A special feature of art and cultural history in Switzerland were small-format glass paintings, which you would like to give as a gift. At the beginning was a solidarity achievement that developed into a prestige gift: even in the post-medieval period, a window was expensive. In a new building, the builder asked for financial help from the city, the guild, private individuals. If support has been promised, this announces a stained glass with the crest of the pen embedded in the slug glazing. This custom existed from the 15th century to the Enlightenment. Mostly glass painters received designs for the discs by specialised draftsmen, so-called "disc cracks", differentiated specifications for the glass paintings. The catalogue presents the important, approximately 300 sheets of the Munich State Graphic Collection. Among them are top works by Tobias Stimmer, Jost Amman, Daniel Lindtmayer, Christoph Murer, draftsman of European rank. They occupy highly ranking and multifaceted probably the most idiosyncratic division of Swiss art.
