Im Zuge der digitalen Revolution machen Fab Labs (kurz für Fabrication Laboratory) Hightech-Produktionstechnologien für kleine Arbeitsgruppen oder Privatpersonen verfügbar, die dort "fast alles" selber machen können. Fab Labs sind gleichzeitig Werkstatt und Labor, ausgestattet mit digitalen Produktionsmaschinen wie Lasercutter, CNC-Fräsmaschinen und 3D-Druckern. Nach Desktop Publishing und digitaler Videobearbeitung wird nun auch die Produktion von physischen Produkten für jeden überall möglich.
In der ersten Hälfte der Publikation werden Themenbereiche wie die Entstehungsgeschichte, die Philosophie dahinter, die geschäftlichen Aspekte sowie die Techniken, Methoden und Arbeitsprozesse von verschiedenen Autoren beleuchtet. Im Anschluss daran wird exemplarisch der Gestaltungs- und Produktionsprozess in einem niederländischen Fab Lab vorgestellt. In der umfangreichen Fab Gallery am Ende des Buches werden rund 30 bemerkenswerte Produkte jeweils auf mehreren Seiten gezeigt und so die ganze Vielfalt der Möglichkeiten der Fab Labs zur Anschauung gebracht.
