Synopsis

The dichotomy of man and animal anchored in the philosophical tradition contrasts the rationally gifted subject - devoid of the logo - homogeneous "animal". It thus establishes a logo-centric position of man, whose potential animality is extinguished. Derrida undermines these violent accesses of language and thought by introducing a new word: animot . It shows that the speech of 'the animal' is only a word ( mot ), and gives homophonic to hear that there are 'animaux' only in the plural. Passing through the tradition of Aristotle to Descartes, Kant, Heidegger to Lacan and Lévinas, as well as questioning the experiences of "nudity" and "suffering", Derrida points to the fragility of the assumed limits of man's "own" that establish the classic human-animal contrast.
