Synopsis

With the publication of his 95 theses against the indulgence trade, Martin Luther gave the initial ignition for the Reformation in 1517. For the Reformation anniversary, the book recalls that Vienna was once a majority Protestant city. In the 16th century, Vienna was under religious and political tension: the city was Residenz Catholic emperor and regional rulers, but at the same time also the centre of the Protestant-dominated Lower Austrian nobility. Although the population became Protestant in their majority, the ruling Habsburgs fought the evangelical cult rigorously. At the same time, Protestant communities were born in the castles at the gates of Vienna. The upheavals that accompanied the Reformation affected all areas of society, culture, science, economics, and politics.
