A new generation internet protocol (IPv6), has been receiving growing attention and deployed worldwide. With 128-bit address, an extremely large address space is provided and IPv6 poses a great challenge to the routing table lookup algorithms. This paper provides the reader with an introduction about IPv4 and IPv6, which is a comparison between two protocol versions. Furthermore, this work explains Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), which is one of the important network services in the network. It helps the administrator to assign dynamic and auto-configure IP address to the client workstation using a centralized DHCP server. In addition, this paper concentrates on DHCPv6, which provides a framework for passing configuration information, via extensions, to IPv6 nodes. It offers the capability of automatic allocation of reusable network addresses and additional configuration flexibility, and this protocol can be considered a Stateful counterpart to the IPv6 Stateless Address Auto configuration protocol specification, and can be used separately or to gather with the latter to obtain configuration information.
