Studies in Coptic architecture are rare, for this reason, this book aims to enhance the understanding of Coptic architecture, to increase knowledge of this important part of the Egyptian heritage, in addition to preparing a solid ground for architects when designing Coptic Orthodox Churches. This is achieved through marking the liturgical service needs and requirements for the rites that tailored the church building. Analysis of factors that affected the church design; the existing civilizations, cultures and beliefs, historical architectural examples, and building materials, is undergone. Then, a study on the development of the church design chronologically is presented. Where there is architecture, there is definitely art, especially in buildings of a special nature like churches. The research studies the art in the architecture of the Coptic Church with its different themes, domains and symbols. An applied study is done by the analysis of some examples of contemporary Coptic Orthodox churches. These examples are chosen among urban churches not monastic. Finally, conclusions and recommendations for future studies are presented.
