The book, deliberately written in generally understandable language for all interested readers, paints a unique, transdisciplinary overall picture of resilience as a national and international social factor of our time. It shows that in terms of socio-political significance, the concept of resilience is in no way inferior to the older, hitherto dominant concepts of sustainability and development; indeed, it actively complements them, in some cases contradicts them, but also completes them. Resilience as a societal factor involves all sectors, such as politics, the economy, science and civil society, and thus represents an indispensable frame of reference in the overarching recent debate on the "learning society".
"Fathi analyzes the still little-tapped topic of "societal resilience" from entirely new perspectives and with a stimulating thematic breadth. A must-read for anyone who wants to grasp this topic holistically." Prof. Dr. Uwe Schneidewind"synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.
Dr. Karim Fathi works in Berlin as a researcher, consultant and teacher in the fields of multidisciplinarity, resilience, conflict transformation and agility. He is currently a researcher at the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) on the topics of "Transdisciplinary Complexity Management" and "Systemic Change" and advises the Future Circle of the BMBF.
What are universal principles of societal multi-resilience in the face of manifold interconnected and multi-dimensional global challenges? In how far do the guiding concepts of (multi-)resilience, sustainability and development contradict, but also complement each other? How can they contribute to securing societal future in the twenty-first century? This book draws a cross-disciplinary perspective and outlines guiding principles for further research and policy-making practice.
Dr. Karim Fathi is active in Berlin as a lecturer and policy advisor with focus on Resilience Studies and Interdisciplinary Communication. He is member of the Future Circle of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and advises authorities, NGOs and companies in the field of multi-resilience.
