Synopsis

Mongolia is an isolated country with a large territory and a small population. Population density of an average of 1.5 persons per square kilometre makes economic growth, human development and environmental sustainability a challenge especially in rural areas. Geographic and social isolation affect rural communities both politically and economically. Isolation results in ?information hunger? in rural Mongolia and contributes to poverty growing after the country?s transition to market economy in 1990. This work explores the opportunity of using information and communication technologies (ICTs) to address isolation and the lack of information in rural Mongolia. The methodology of the research is based on literature review; qualitative and quantitative evidences are drawn from literature, published and unpublished reports, policy papers as well as internet research. This book is intended for students, researchers and professionals in agriculture and rural development.
