kart. Condition: Gut. XXI, 175 S. : 22 graph. Darst. ; 23 cm; Gutes Ex.; Seiten minimal gebräunt. - Vortitel mit Widmung und SIGNIERT von Marcus Spies. - Many inferences in our everyday and professional lives take place in an uncertain environment. As for the reasons behind our conclusions and subsequent decisions we often need to content ourselves with imprecisely known quantities and to rely on plausible rules. Such inferences cannot be described by classical logic. Models accounting for the uncertainty inherent in inferences mainly stem from research into Artificial Intelligence (AI). Among these, the calculus of fuzzy quantifiers and the theory of support logic programming have received widespread interest. They are presented and thoroughly discussed in this book. An open problem, however, is the compatibility of such models with actual human performance. If this compatibility cannot be assumed to hold true, reliability and acceptability problems with expert systems will soon become overwhelming. A comprehensive empirical study designed to evaluate compatibility for different inferential problem classes constitutes a major part of the book. A measure of compatibility is defined and practically relevant factors of inference problems are isolated whose effects on compatibility is then empirically assessed. Results are discussed with respect to psychological implications and consequences for the design of AI systems. Human biases in inferences under uncertainty are revealed and desirable further developments of the models under consideration are indicated.
