Ivano Matteoli, son of a KP official, leaves his Tuscan home village in Leningrad in the early sixties. There he gets to know Bea - Beate Ulbricht, the "first state child of the GDR" and daughter of Walter Ulbricht. This is the beginning of an amour fou between East and West, a love in the political mesh between Paris, Leningrad, Rome, East Berlin and the arch-Catholic Cigoli.
The narrator Anni knows Ivano from childhood. On the roofs of the old houses of their Tuscan home village, they both sat together and watched the men play bowls. Even when it takes her in different directions because of studying - she to Paris, him to Leningrad - Anni pursues Ivano's love for the German Beate from a distance. Their parents, Walter and Lotte Ulbricht, try to prevent the marriage of the two. This does not succeed, but the price is high. Ines Geipel has succeeded, in her very own tone, a refined and contrasting novel about how the authoritarian penetrates into the most intimate interior of life.
