Our endeavours in science and technology are still limited too much to academic discciplines and national boundaries. We are still pushing energy-intensive technologies; the armament. race with its potential for multiple overkill is continuing to spread. There is, however, also a growing community of ideas and a community of action .which looks at global problems as human problems, and which recognizes that even though there is a great diversity of cultural identities and a multiplicity of ways of development, the individual destinies are linked to the fate of mankind. , As we can no longer afford to merely await the morrow, and as we have to try to anticipate, to invent it, the World Future Studies Federation (WFSF) and the German Foundation for International Development (DSE) decided to cooperate in the World Future Studies Conference (WFSC), under the theme of Science and Technology and the Future. In April, 1977 the General Assembly of the WFSF decided to have the World Future Studies Conference (WFSC) of 1979, in Berlin. On September 1, 1977 the Executive Committee of the World Federation chose point four of the temporary agenda of the United Nations Conference on Science and Technology for Development (UNCSTD) Science and Technology and the Future to be the theme for the World Conference in Berlin. The WFSC was intended to be a preliminary conference for the UNCSTD.
