Developments in telepathology are progressing at a great speed. As a consequence, there is a need for a broad overview of the field. This first ever book on telepathology is presented in such a way that it should make it accessible to anyone, independent of their kno- edge of technology. The text is designed to be used by all prof- sionals, including pathologists, surgeons, nurses and allied health professionals, and computer scientists. In a very short time, driven by technical developments, the field of telepathology has become too extensive to be covered by only a small number of experts. Therefore, this Telepathology book has been written with chapter contributions from a host of renowned international authorities in telepathology (see the Table of Contents and the List of Contributors). This ensures that the subject matter focusing on recent advances in telepathology is truly up to date. Our guiding hope during this task was that as editors of multiple chapters we could still write with a single voice and keep the content coherent and simple. We hope that the clarity of this book makes up for any limitations in its comprehensiveness.

From the reviews:
"This is a collection of 16 review articles, each of which deals with a specific aspect of telepathology. It also contains ample charts and graphs, as well as gross pictures and micrographs chosen to help readers better understand this relatively new discipline. ... Even though it was written for academics, clinicians, and computer scientists, it could be used by students and even lay persons who have a limited knowledge of pathology. ... Overall, the book does a wonderful job ... ." (Michael Adam Prochaska, Doody’s Review Service, May, 2009)
Written by experts from around the globe, "Telepathology" explains technical issues, digital information processing and collective experiences from practitioners in different parts of the world practicing a wide range of telepathology applications. This includes such examples telepathology for gastrointestinal biopsy specimens, telepathology at the United States Veterans Health Administration, experience with teleneuropathology, applications of virtual microscopy, telepathology in micrographic surgery, dynamic and static robotic techniques for realtime telepathology, telecytology, feasibility and diagnostic agreement in teledermatopathology, remote control of the scanning electron microscope, ultrastructural telepathology, remote EM-diagnostics, and telepathology for rapid diagnosis of neurosurgical specimens. The authors lay the foundation for the globalisation of telepathological procedures, based on the facts that a pathological analysis can be performed on a patient anywhere in the world.
