Der Band enthält fünf Interviews mit Personen, die die faszinierende Technik "Computer" und die aufstrebende Wissenschaft "Informatik" entscheidend mitgestaltet haben. Die Gespräche wurden im Rahmen eines Interdisziplinären Forschungsprojekts zur "Sozialgeschichte der Informatik" der Technischen Universität Berlin geführt, in dem soziale und kulturelle Einflüsse auf die wissenschaftliche und technische Entwicklung untersucht wurden. In den fünf Erzählungen verknüpfen die Akteure ihre Lebensumstände und Orientierungen mit dem frühen Bau elektronischer Rechenanlagen, der Erarbeitung von Programmiersprachen oder der Etablierung der Disziplin Informatik. Sie betonen immer wieder die Zufälligkeit wegweisender Informationen und veranschaulichen gleichzeitig, wie unentbehrlich Eigeninitiative und soziale wie fachliche Kompetenz sind. Die Befragten stammen aus Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz und sind für ihre Impulse und ihre Kritik weltweit bekannt und geachtet. Sie gehören der ersten oder zweiten Generation von Informatikpionieren an und berichten über entsprechend weite Zeiträume. Ihre Geschichten zeigen, wie sich in der wissenschaftlich-technischen Entwicklung persönliche, fachliche und zeitgeschichtliche Anteile mischen.
