Synopsis
The Interregnum, the phase between the end of the Stauferherrschaft in Germany and the election of Rudolf von Habsburg as the Roman-German king (1245/50 – 1273), still adheres to the image of the "imperialless, terrible time" (Schiller). This judgment is grounded in specific normative ideas of order and reflects a decidedly national view. On the basis of modern research approaches, Martin Kaufhold makes an informed reassessment of this time: starting from the real experiences of contemporaries, which were reflected in concrete actions and decision-making processes, he analyzes political and constitutional developments including the role of the Church in a European perspective. In doing so, the political actors prove to be pragmatic and capable of learning and the period of interregnum appears as a formative phase in the formation of the late medieval imperial constitution.
