Synopsis

Covering interface science from a novel surface science perspective, this handbook offers a comprehensive overview of both these and numerous other topics.

The initial chapters treat basic fundamentals on such topics as vacuum technology, while general chapters -- where appropriate -- describe theoretical methods and provide models to help explain the respective phenomena, such as band structure calculations, chemisorption and segregation. Additionally, short references to more specialized methodology accompany the descriptions of the most important techniques.

Ideal as a reference for scientists in the field, as well as an introduction to current methods for newcomers.

About the Author

Klaus Wandelt is Full Professor in Physical Chemistry and Director of the Institute of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Bonn, Germany. In 1975 he received his PhD on electron spectroscopic investigations of alloy surfaces. After a postdoctoral stay at the IBM-Research Laboratory in San Jose, California, he qualified as a professor on the concept and detection of the local work function in 1981.
His research interests focuses on fundamental aspects of the physics and chemistry of metal surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum conditions and in electrolytes, on the atomic structure of amorphous materials, and more recently on processes at the surface of plants.
Professor Wandelt has organized numerous national and international conferences and workshops, edited conference proceedings and books, and published about 400 research papers.
Professor Wandelt is Regional Editor Europe of Surface Science since 1995.

From the Back Cover

Having discussed the basic concepts and experimental methods of surface science in Volume 1, and made clear the peculiarities of surfaces with examples of elementary solids in volume 2, the present volume 3 moves one step forward in complexity and describes the surface properties of composite surfaces, like alloys, oxides, glasses, ice etc.

In volume 4 surfaces serve as substrates for the deposition of materials. Emphasis is placed on the growth and the properties of ultrathin metallic, oxidic and organic films, graphene as well as nano-clusters on them.
