Synopsis

The Commission for the Investigation of Health Hazards of Chemical Compounds in the Work Area was called into being by the German Science Foundation in 1955. Its mandate was to continue the development begun by German toxicologists in the last century and to establish a scientific basis for the protection of workers from the adverse effects of toxic chemicals, making recommendations for the establishment of "MAK" values (maximimum concentrations at the workplace) and the classification of carcinogenic substances. Since then the scope of the Commission's activities has been extended, and its recommendations are published annually in the form of evaluation documents. The present volume is the first in a series of English translations of these evaluation documents, including a selection of the Commission's work in the establishment of "MAK" values in the last two years.
