Synopsis
As a central data type of the natural and social sciences, the curve is characterised by a technically secured objectivity, which is decidedly discussed in the cultural and humanities. The present book applies to the attempt to read this unambiguous assignment as the phantasm of modernity. The question of what to start with curves and what knowledge value they have becomes a gateway for all conceivable irrationalisms and subjectivities. In recourse to the curve, the method ideal of the natural sciences can be participated without revealing the semantic needs of the humanities and cultural sciences. The strategic handling of curves thus becomes a science-historically precise commentary on the precarious relationship of the two science cultures.
