Synopsis

Since the ›New confusion‹ and – together with it – ›a researchly accepted perplexity‹ have been declared hallmarks of our time, one has become accustomed to attest the contemporary society disorientation and uncertainty of action as well as to determine and complain about the loss of social order. Historically new, such complaints are not. They occur considerably more frequently than the times when the loss of order has actually gained the upper hand. Thus, the question arises of those rather inconspicuous order factors and forms which, despite the ›individualisation of life situations‹ and the perplexity in the face of an overarching ›complexity‹ of modern societies, are involved in keeping those societies together.

The author describes and analyzes symbolic forms, patterns and types of (self-)staging of individuals and groups using case studies. It becomes clear that every interpretation of social action is too short when it dispenses with an analysis of the (symbolic) forms in which actors dress their action: only too often the forms form in secret or eerie way a ›content‹ that remains hidden from the actors themselves.

In the description and material analysis of concrete phenomena, the author now illustrates what he had theoretically characterized in the volume Interpretation of Everyday Life – The Everyday Life of Interpretation (stw 785) as a methodology and method of historical-reconstructive, social science hermeneutics.
