Synopsis

A man sits in his Australian room and invents an author in Szolnok, Hungary, who in turn writes letters to his young lecturer in the prairie of South Dakota. He is very careful to minimise the age difference and he sends her a picture of the family grave instead of an author photo. At some point, however, her prairie no longer seems distinguishable from the wasteland outside his window and she dissolves on his letter pages. And at all, she and the stories from distant lands are soon overwritten by painful childhood memories of a girl from the neighborhood.

Gerald Murnane is the great solitaire of English-language literature and domestically his murnanesque novel. A novel about longing and guilt, about what seems to us all into childhood and in which no one has been - touch gestures on the moving boundaries between sprawling inner world and imagined outside world.
