Synopsis

The author Max Frisch relies on transformation, becoming delicious, the finished somehow dreary. Is our power for the possible not enough to realise the famous "I imagine" as a silver touch in our existence? Again and again, the diary entry from New Year's Day 1949 magically attracts me. Max Frisch reflects here on the climate of sympathy. He sees in sympathy - and not in love - the power that gives wings. And it gives sympathy the shape of a guardian angel with whom we grew up, on whom we rely and which, although it is only a hint, separates us from the monstrous. The monstrous would therefore be the climate without sympathy? The skeptical philosophizing poet asks the question whether the indispensable climate may be nothing but friendly deception, but this one, the climate with intolerance and hatred the more valid? But since we cannot be without sympathy, he concludes: "Lost: without guardian angel". The colon doubles the insight.
The contributions of this Festschrift have emerged from the climate of sympathy that the authors feel for their great writer colleague. The contributions show how many times the reactions of readers to the author Max Frisch can be: denominations and discussions, descriptions and conjectures, memories as a realization, attempts of "I imagine" and "How would my biography have gone if ...". Encounters with the author, encounters with his characters. (S. Unseldt)
