Synopsis
Der aus dem Rheinland stammende Hugo Balzer war zwischen 1928 und 1950 einer der bedeutendsten deutschen Opernkapellmeister. Seine Wagner-, Reger-, Hindemith- und Strauss-Auffuhrungen sind beruhmt geworden. Komponisten wie Bartok, Hindemith, Pfitzner, Weill u.a. schrieben ihm enthusiastische Briefe. Hindemith behauptete, Balzers Auffuhrung des 'Cardillac' sei die beste, die er je gehort habe, und Richard Strauss erklarte Balzer sogar zu 'seinem' Dirigenten. Balzer war Generalmusikdirektor in Freiburg und Dusseldorf und grundete 1935 in Dusseldorf das Stadtische Robert Schumann-Konservatorium, aus dem 1987 die Dusseldorfer Musikhochschule hervorging. Helmut Kirchmeyer ist einer seiner Nachfolger im Amt des Direktors gewesen. Aus Anlass von Balzers 25. Todestag sichtete er alle in den einschlagigen Archiven noch vorhandenen Balzerakten, befragte uberlebende Zeugen und sammelte privates Briefmaterial. Der Autor erkennt Balzer als einen Menschen, der auf alle erdenkliche Weise versucht, die politische Realitat einer Blutdiktatur moglichst unbeschadet zu uberstehen, an seiner eigenen Zeit vorbeizukommen und im Rahmen seiner Moglichkeiten Gutes zu bewirken.

Helmut Kirchmeyer, Musikwissenschaftler, Lehrtatigkeit u. a. an der Technischen Hochschule Aachen und der Universitat Dusseldorf. Zuletzt Rektor der Robert-Schumann-Hochschule Dusseldorf. Forschungsschwerpunkte: Strawinsky (Werkverzeichnis), Neue Musik (Grundung Wergo-Studioreihe fur neue Musik), Wagner (Dokumentationen), Musikkritik (Situationsgeschichte), Mittelalter ("Ars gregoriana").
