Synopsis

Thorsten Becker revives the historical novel, with a wide-ranging epic about Friedrich the Great, the Old Fritz, as a statesman and general creator of Prussia's Gloria and responsible for a constellation of the European great powers that ended two centuries later in the horror of two world wars. Thomas and Heinrich Mann planned a novel about this figure so decisive for German fate - and Thorsten Becker slips into the skin of the brothers, plots and thinks in their name that it only smokes over the battlefields of the great Prussian expansion. Friedrich himself is also sharply outlined: his enlightened despotism, his sense of art, his hidden homosexuality, his French identity and his literary wit. With fresh irony and political clarity, Becker frees the old Fritz from the ruch of the tasteful, German-heroic, who has been attached to him since the cheesy films of his life from the thirties and fifties of the past century. He presents him in a new guise before us: as a gifted state leader, as a pioneer of political modernity and, last but not least, as a weak, deeply lonely individual.
