Synopsis

In the process known as human communication, by means of which people seek to overcome their physical and mental isolation from others, they must "contextualize" themselves and their speech in many ways - spatially, temporally, psychologically and socially - in order to be understood. Such contextualizing means choosing a topic, standpoint and perspective relative to which statements about real and imaginary objects and events, for instance, can be made, questions asked, and demands and wishes expressed. In giving one's speech such a relative anchoring, one is said to be making "reference" to something in order to be able thereafter to talk about it.
