Synopsis

This study of the speeches in Statius's "Thebaid" examines the background and formulation of the speeches, their role in the narrative and thematic design of the epic, and other matters pertaining to their form, function and meaning. The study aims to increase the understanding of Statius's style of epic composition. The study begins with an overview of the speeches and continues by considering narrative strategy and the role of speeches, rhetorical-type speeches, nonrhetorical-type speeches, the revelation of character in the speeches, and elements of style in the speeches. It shows that Statius adapts the conventions of rhetoric and uses its resources in the composition of his speeches, which serve ultimately to reveal the thoughts and feelings of the poet on the human condition.
