Synopsis

Love, sorrow and retribution in the Ruhrpott - a German saga.

A kiosk in Duisburg is the starting point of a fast-paced story that takes her hero through the Ruhrpott, to Warsaw and down to the Großglocknerstraße - and to the limits of his love and suffering ability.

With »Liebesbrand« and »Hinterland«, Feridun Zaimoglu has successfully brought romance back to German contemporary literature, and now he turns to a region that could hardly be German: the Ruhrpott, industrial waste in transition to the service region. The area is in transition, and broken is also the hero of this story. Renz was a doctor, but when his wife was murdered by a burglar, his world shattered and broke his will. For several years, he has been helping out with his father-in-law, who runs a kiosk in the middle of Duisburg, takes care of the everyday worries of drinkers and hangers, mourns for his wife and senses on retribution. His life comes back in motion when he is assigned to bring back a disturbed young man from Warsaw. Again in Duisburg, he falls in love with the waitress Marja, but then the past catches up with him: he learns about the release of the perpetrator and attaches to his heels.

Zaimoglu depicts the drama of a person who hardly holds anything in life, against the backdrop of a world marked by a long tradition and is just reinventing itself. Great German literature!
