Synopsis

Awakened from the stroke - the stunning story of a healing

Helene Wesendahl doesn't know how to happen: she finds herself in the hospital, without control over her body, speechless, with memory gaps. Her way back to life confronts her with a foreign woman who was once herself.

Kathrin Schmidt grabs her readers this time through the limitation, and in the literal sense. With the eyes of her awakening heroine, we look into a hospital room, at other patients, the nursing staff and her own body, which suddenly seems to lead a life of its own. And we witness the arduous rehab measures, the family's reactions, the sacrificial use of her husband - and the fragmentary return of her memory.

What comes to light, Helene confronts with a life in which she hardly recognises herself, and which questions much that seems so natural in the new situation. She discovers early fractures in her biography, repressed passions, and obligations born of need. When she becomes aware that her heart had already gone off and she actually wanted to leave the man who now cares for her so eagerly, she threatens to lose the ground under her feet.

Kathrin Schmidt succeeds in the amazing: she makes the loss of orientation and speech experience after a brain injury and shows a path of recovery that leads in two directions, back and forward. This creates a development novel of its own kind, which captivates by its inner dynamics and fascinates by the restraint with which his heroine confronts her past and present. It impresses above all with the moving description of a linguistic new beginning.
