Synopsis

Frankfurt am Main 1974. A lawyer is found dead in his firm. The circumstances of his death are unexplained. The police investigate: he was a lawyer of the left scene, his clientele included RAF members, rockers, junkies and stick boys.
His wife, who has lived apart from him for three years, begins to deal with him once again: with his work, his life - and her love. What does she actually know about this man she once loved who was so familiar to her?
Soon, the widow himself becomes the target of police investigations, is suspected of participation in political activities while receiving encrypted messages from the political underground. To comprehend, she seeks out his colleagues, clients from the half-world, comrades and former revolutionaries and returns to dark spelunks. She is drawn deeper and deeper into a hidden life of the dead, which at the same time becomes increasingly stranger.
Apparent death is the novel of a love at times of great political unrest. Eva Demski tells unsentimentally, yet with a fine sense of a woman who is faced with the challenge of exploring a life in death while coping with memories and doubts, grief and loss.
