Synopsis

When Paula Becker gets to know the much older Otto Modersohn in 1899, she is a young, ambitious artist who wants to paint at any cost, he has long been recognised, one of the founders of the artist colony in Worpswede and also married. Despite these adversities, mutual attraction is unmistakable, and a year later the two become a couple. Even the first letters they change during Paula Becker's trips to Berlin and Paris testify to the great affection of the two, but also of their deep connection in artistic creation. In the later years, the written exchange serves time and time again to deal with painting and the formulation of artistic goals. And last but not least, there are anecdotes from the Worpsweder circle of friends to tell, and Paula Becker reports amused from the marriage preparation course in Berlin.

The surprising find of much of Otto Modersohn's letters to Paula Modersohn-Becker, which were considered lost for many years, makes it possible for the first time to illuminate this vibrant exchange in detail.
