Synopsis

Clear and practical, this basic work introduces the mechanical construction of combustion engines. It is aimed at students of mechanical engineering and vehicle technology, but is also suitable for car and motorcycle fans as well as hobby users in general due to its easy-to-understand preparation form.

The book focuses on teaching mechanical-mathematical basics as well as practical construction knowledge. The thermodynamic process sequences in motors are deliberately excluded.

The following topics are covered:
- Functionality and categorisation of internal combustion engines (focus on petrol engines).
- Two-stroke and four-stroke engines with their respective special features.
- Mechanical components of a motor: crankshaft & connecting rod, bearings & lubrication, pistons & cylinders, valves & camshaft
- Additional auxiliary units such as ignition systems, starter motors and carburettors.
- Construction and calculation of the relevant components up to the design.
- Construction of camshafts.

In addition, the book contains numerous application examples. These include constructive engine improvements and self-constructions of simple engines. All presented DIY projects were built by the author himself and tested and tested in a test laboratory. In this way, prospective engineers are taught valuable workshop practice, which also takes into account the handling of lathe, milling machine and welding machine. Supplementary videos on the design and manufacture of engines complete the contents.
