Synopsis

This is the third volume in a series of biotechnology reviews published every 12 to 18 months. Aiming to fill the need for responsible overviews, flooded as we are with information, FOCUS highlights and interprets key developments with appeal to both industrial and academic readers. All different areas of biotechnology are considered and in every volume FOCUS treats three main selections: 1) Basic fundamentals of biotechnology - covered in six to eight chapters for chemical engineers, microbiologists, applied biochemists and genetic engineers 2) Protocols - from which after several years the editors expect to develop a sound laboratory techniques guide for chemical engineers. Some of these will be apparatus-oriented, some recipes for isolating enzymes, etc. All will be new procedures. 3) Information - dealing with regulations, editorial perspectives, research programs, company profiles, industry standards, and data base resources. The editors' goal is to bridge the gap among each of the subdisciplinary groups comprising biotechnologists. The aim is to give FOCUS readers general information about other specialists' work.

Coverage is not critical, but provides synthesis on topic themes which receive rotating treatments every several years. So a reader should not look here just as his or her own field but, also at the others. Focus is a kind of progress report or series of "advances" unlike a conference proceeding. As a resource it is intended to provide value so that readers do not have to go to ten different journals for perspective. A merged volume directory shows thematically the combined table of contents for the current and all proceeding FOCUS volumes. And it is followed by a year-end summary subject index. As the series grows, users can gain a "broad brush" view of what has happened in the field. On close view what might appear haphazard topic choice in any given volume actually follows a structure which becomes apparent. The cumulative effect of several volumes, each with a constant framework of section headings, gives a generally comprehensive yet evolving picture.
