Synopsis

A family novel full of tragicomics including Polish-Bavarian Culture Clash

"My mother's jukebox" tells of a childhood in Bavaria, of old family stories that always sounded a little too much like Hollywood and comedy nobility, of three brothers who couldn't be more different, and the daughter Tosca, who does not have to return to her roots.

In her inn in the Bavarian province, Tosca's Polish mother once danced to hits from the jukebox with her best guest in the 60s and fell in love against all conventions. But what began so film-ready ended many years later with a war of roses.

As a child, Tosca wanted to become a hit star to earn a lot of money and help the unhappy mother. As an adult woman, she lives a completely different life in Berlin than the rest of the family, but believes she has inherited the parental tendency to relationship failures. Freshly in love, in the middle of the first date with Ron, a subtle osteopath from good home, she reaches a call from her brother: the mother had a fatal accident, the father is in a coma. She must go to Bavaria for the funeral. To her surprise, her Ron offers to accompany her, but has no idea what he is getting into.

For Tosca, visiting her family becomes more and more a journey into her own past and a hardness test for her new love.

When Tosca's father awakens from the coma, he considers the past and his beautiful Polish landlady highly alive. No one gets ready to tell him that she has just been buried. And anyway, the siblings prefer to argue over the only heirloom of value, the old jukebox from the mother's economy, which still gives music from then to the best...

The author Isolde Peter grew up in Bavaria and later moved to Berlin. Her parents' story was inspiration for this word-witted and touching novel about tragicomic family myths, painful losses, and the power of love.
