Synopsis

Whether it was a corrupt governor such as Verres, a seditious religious founder such as Jesus or the controversial Christian martyrs - in the courts of the Roman Empire highly explosive cases were negotiated and judgments of considerable significance were spoken. But where exactly did all this take place? What did a Roman courtroom look like? Were there even fixed spaces for holding trials, or was the place where right and wrong were found quite arbitrary?

This book reconstructs the development of Roman court places from the 1st century BC to the 6th century AD. It shows how the jurisdiction of the emperor, the provincial governors and high officials increasingly shifted into specific buildings, how public and non-public areas were used complementarily, and how the court square spatially accounted for the functional and rank differences of the participants in vertical and horizontal gradation. The popular belief that the courts of Roman magistrates are equated with the forum basilicas of the cities is contrasted here with a far more diverse spectrum. Literary and legal texts, inscriptions, papyri, image sources and archaeological findings are evaluated using the research results of all ancient science disciplines.
