Synopsis

English philosopher John Locke (1632-1704) has dealt with the limitations of human thought and with problems of political freedom and religious peace. His political theory has changed the world: he has argued against absolutism and developed the theory of a free state that arises through contract with free citizens as well as practices separation of powers. Faced with the torn of Christians, Locke considers unity and peace possible on the ground of reason: what goes beyond the rational core of Christianity must be left to the conscience of the individual. Locke is considered a pioneer of a liberal economic policy and the later Whig party. Rainer Specht describes Locke's life, work, and effect against the background of his time, and shows Locke's relationships with medieval and modern philosophy.
