At the beginning of the 20th century, picture postcards had their first heyday. They were a popular communication and collectable item. Today, they are an invaluable source of the shape and history of a city. In this book, over 200 old postcards with motifs from the promenade and the old zoo in Münster are presented and historically explained. The views from the period between about 1900 and 1940 show the promenade and its surroundings as an important and much visited public green area on the edge of the old town. In addition to the tree-lined avenue with its numerous monuments, many historical remains of the former city fortifications can be discovered, such as the Buddha Tower, the kennel, parts of the city wall, the cross hill and the cannon ditch. Special themes deal with the baroque castle and its surroundings as well as the botanical garden. The old zoo has been on the promenade since 1875, of which a variety of impressive postcards exists. By juxtaposing with today's situation, it becomes clear what changes have occurred over the last 100 years.
