Ralph Farrell was born in Sydney on the 4th of February 1908. From 1946 onwards he was Professor of German at the University of Sydney and achieved equal distinction in the fields of literary and linguistic scholarship. His broad range of interest served many generations of young Australian scholars as stimulus towards their own research. This Festschrift is intended to honour a most versatile scholar and one of the most significant figures in Australian German studies.
