About the Author
Lessing wurde am 22.1.1729 in Kamenz/Oberlausitz geboren. Sein Vater war Pastor. Der junge Lessing besuchte zuerst die Stadtschule in Kamenz, von 1741-1746 die Fürstenschule in Meißen. Er studierte danach Medizin (1746-1748) und Theologie in Leipzig. Danach lebte er als freier Schriftsteller in Berlin, wo er für mehrere Zeitungen schrieb. Er hatte Verbindung zu verschiedenen Theatergruppen und schrieb für diese seine ersten Stücke. Dauernd in Geldnot nahm er in Breslau eine Stelle als Sekretär beim General Tauentzien an (1760-1765). 1767 erhielt er eine Anstellung als Dramaturg und Kritiker am Deutschen Nationaltheater in Hamburg, 1770 eine Stelle als Bibliothekar in Wolfenbüttel. Lessing starb am 15.2.1781 in Braunschweig.
