The study of definites and indefinites, which straddles the fields of syntax and semantics, has become a focal point of linguistic research in the last 15 years. Partitive constructions such as "one of the boys" are especially interesting from this point of view, because they exhibit features of both definites and indefinites. This book contains six original essays by Barbara Abbott, Jacob Hoeksema, Jaklin Kornfilt, Ann Reed, Anne Vainikka and Joan Maling, and Karina Wilkinson, dealing with the various semantic, syntactic and pragmatic properties that are exhibited by a number of partitive constructions. The introduction, by the editor, presents an overview of recent literature of partitives. The volume as a whole aims to provide a deeper understanding of the complex linguistic phenomena surrounding partitivity.
