Synopsis

The book provides a detailed empirical approach to constructing grammatical analysis and theory, in particular the analysis of English verbs. It develops an integrated formal description of the English verbal system and offers several theoretical advances in the treatment of verbs that have escaped formulation until now.

From the Back Cover

This book provides a detailed empirical approach to grammatical analysis and theory, in particular to the constructions built around English verbs. Its integrated formal character focuses on how English verbs are modified and how they combine into larger structures. This text justifies several new hypotheses on the syntax of mood (±Realis) and tense, on the limits of (ir)regularity, and on the nature of contrasts among non-finite forms, putting forward a novel syntactic analysis of passive voice. These analyses use an integrated and restrictive theory of categories, and put emphasis on explicitly formalizing the lexical entries of verbal elements, both free and bound morphemes. The volume is thus both theoretically innovative and rich in morphosyntactic 'patterns that matter' to support its proposals.
