Synopsis
This study proposes an ambitious typology of the written representation of oral speech. It is based on a detailed semiological examination of the relationship between orality and literacy as well as on an analysis of data stemming from literary discourse. Three types of representation of orality are distinguished, where the written form appeals to the phonographic system, the metalinguistic semantics or the prosodic performance of the reader.

C'est une évidence pour tout lecteur qui est en même temps locuteur: il y a de l'oral dans l'écrit. Quels parcours interprétatifs nous conduisent à juger que tel texte est fait pour être écouté, ou pour représenter l'oral, ou qu'il est écrit « comme on parle » ? Peut-on décrire les modalités de la « présence » de l'oral éprouvée dans l'écrit à la lecture de Céline ou de Sarraute, mais aussi de sms, de copies d'élèves ou encore de récits de tradition orale ?
En découvrant les trois familles de la représentation écrite de l'oral (phonographie, sémantique métalangagière et sollicitation prosodique), dégagées ici à partir d'un grand nombre d'exemples, le lecteur se confrontera aussi à une question linguistique fondamentale: celle de l'articulation de la langue écrite et de la langue orale (ergonomie comparée des signaux phoniques et graphiques, rapports entre prosodie et ponctuation, grammaire préférentielle de l'écrit et de l'oral, ou encore place de l'imaginaire de l'oralité et de l'écriture dans l'activité interprétative).
