Methods in Historical Pragmatics is a collection of studies on the history of the English language from the perspective of historical pragmatics, broadly construed. They represent the critical convergence of different traditions of reading texts and analyzing discourse and, accordingly, expose key questions about the methods and the outcomes of such readings or analyses. Areas covered include the problems of identifying speech acts in earlier discourse, the historical nature of interrogation in courtroom discourse and of thetransactional activities in service encounters, the structure andfunctions of narrative discourse, and the history of meanings andexpressions. The volume will interest scholars in English historical linguistics, literary history, philology, and discourse analysis.
