Synopsis

"The 2000 Sculpture" by American artist Walter De Maria (1935-2013) is one of the largest floor sculptures in the interior worldwide. Specially designed for the large exhibition hall of the Kunsthaus Zurich, it was first shown there in 1992. The installation consists of a total of 2000 white plaster bars of the same size, but different number of edges, which results in a constantly changing overall view of the work in accordance with a specific rhythm. The surrounding room, lighting conditions changing throughout the day and the respective viewpoint of the viewer also support these changes. After presentations in other institutions as well as a second time in the Kunsthaus Zürich in 1999/2000, "The 2000 Sculpture" will now be shown again in this place and form a meditative counterpole to the opening of David Chipperfield's expansion building in autumn 2021. The book appearing on this exhibition documents the outstanding work of Walter De Maria in picture and text. It includes an interview by curator Mirjam Varadinis with collectors Thomas and Cristina Bechtler, who have worked closely with the artist, and an essay by Philip Ursprung on contextualizing the work. The rendition of the first text ever about "The 2000 Sculpture" from the pen of the legendary exhibition maker Harald Szeemann (1933-2005), thanks to whose mediation it was created, rounds off the band.
