Synopsis

Ernst A. Heiniger (1909-1993) began to photograph autodidactically in the style of new vision in 1929. In the 1930s, he operated with Heiri Steiner in Zurich an innovative studio for photography and graphics, designed posters and published with Puszta Pferde in 1936 one of the first modern photo books in Switzerland. On the occasion of the World Exhibition of Photography in Lucerne, he met Walt Disney in 1952. This encounter animated the Swiss, who had turned to documentary film in the 1940s, to jump across the Atlantic. Heiniger's films Ama Girls about Japanese divers and Grand Canyon each ran before Disney's animated films and were both awarded Oscars as best short films in 1959.

Ernst A. Heiniger's archive has been located in the Swiss Photo Foundation since 2014 and forms the basis for this first comprehensive monograph. Richly illustrated with the most important photographs, photographs, book designs and film stills, the book presents Heiniger's extensive work in a representative selection. In the accompanying essays, Patricia Banzer goes on biographical trace search, Katharina Rippstein examines Heiniger's landscape photography and Muriel Willi takes a photohistorical classification of his work.

Golden award in the competition of the German Photo Book Prize 21/22 in the category photo history.
